Healthy Choices Include Protecting Skin From Sun

Limiting exposure to sun is an easy action we can all take

At Kamloops Skin Solutions, our goal is to add value to people’s lives through education, promotion of healthy lifestyle choices, and providing state of the art treatment options. During this time of year, when people love to enjoy the outdoors, we want to remind all our clients and friends about the benefits of limiting exposure to the sun to protect your skin. Sun damage is largely preventable and we encourage all our patients to follow guidelines set out by the Canadian Dermatology Association which provides this helpful list of sun safety information:

  • The highest amount of UV radiation in the day occurs between 11 am and 3 pm.
  • Overcast skies don’t mean there’s no risk—up to 80% of UV radiation can pass through clouds. Sunlight doesn’t have to be direct to do damage. Light reflected off surfaces such as sand, water, concrete, and snow can also cause damage. Reflected ultraviolet light (UV) is a particular hazard for the eyes.
  • A tan is actually an indication of skin damage. No matter your skin colour, you are still at risk of developing skin cancer.
  • Working in the shade, wearing a hat and lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers your skin is the best form of protection.
  • Apply sunblock generously to areas of skin not covered by clothing.
  • Sunscreens deteriorate in extreme heat, so store yours away from sources of heat.
  • Reapply every 2 hours if you plan to be outside all day.
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent can be used together; apply sunscreen first, then the repellent.

Kamloops Skin Solutions carries Vivier Pharma products including  Triple Protection SPF 30, which is a full spectrum sunblock containing minerals such as zinc oxide and titanium oxide, two key ingredients to a full physical block.

Dynamic Laser Corrects Spots Related To Sun Damage

Excel V™ a versatile, effective laser therapy

Thinking about those brown and red spots on your skin that you find unattractive? In medical terms these are “benign pigmented lesions” and “superficial vascular conditions”.

Excel V™ by Cutera is versatile laser therapy that can precisely treat a variety of skin conditions from sun spots, Rosacea, acne and vascular abnormalities.

It is quickly becoming one of our most popular treatments.

The technology is very flexible, with 2 laser wavelengths that can be used separately or together. Many people have multiple concerns that require different laser wavelengths to achieve correction. Most conditions require 2 or 3 sessions, which last about 15 to 30 minutes each, although the number of visits may vary based on extent of condition.

This treatment can feel like the snap of a rubber band on the skin. The Excel V™ utilizes a cooling treatment tip that provides comfort to the skin before and after pulse delivery. The procedure can be done in 30 minutes, the perfect lunchtime procedure. There is no downtime.

Poikiloderma is a skin condition that consists of areas of hypopigmentation, hyperpigmentation and telangiectasias (dilation of small blood vessels). It is usually seen on neck and chest.

The Excel V™ has signature Laser Genesis™ which applies micro pulses of laser energy that activate collagen remodelling to improve appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, texture, tone and the red scars of acne. It also reduces pore size and shrinks sebaceous glands that are enlarged in acne prone skin.

A series of six treatments will help accelerate clearing of acne and reduce scarring.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects many people. It is characterized by redness, flushing, tiny bumps or pimples, and enlarged blood vessels. Although there is no cure, there are treatment options that reduce symptoms and improve appearance. In addition to good skin care, sunscreens, topical antibiotics and azelaic acid, Laser Therapy is highly effective in reducing the vascularity that causes redness.

As warmer weather and sunshine turn our thoughts to sun-safe practices, it’s the perfect time to get in touch with Kamloops Skin Solutions about this award-winning technology. Learn more about the Excel V™ or contact us today to book a consultation.
