Dermal Fillers
The natural aging process changes the contour of the face due to loss of volume. Over time there is a loss of collagen, fat, muscle and bone. This may cause hollow cheeks, jowls, under eye circles, thinning lips, lines around the mouth and deeper creases from corner of nose (nasolabial) and mouth (marionette lines).

It is possible to replace some of this lost volume with dermal fillers, recreating a younger-looking profile. Certain dermal fillers like Sculptra and Radiesse will stimulate your body’s own collagen and elastin production to maintain smoothness.
At Kamloops Skin solutions we use three types of fillers:
- Hyaluronic Acid (eg. Juvéderm®, Belotero®, Restylane®)
- Radiesse® (Calcium Hydroxylapatite)
- Sculptra® (Poly-L-Lactic Acid)
HYALURONIC ACID
Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in tissues and it integrates smoothly with minimal side effects. It is harmlessly absorbed into the body over time.
Juvéderm, Restylane and Belotero are all non-animal hyaluronic acid fillers. No allergy testing is required before treatment. Chemically they are similar, but structurally slightly different products.
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers are used to treat:
- Nasolabial folds

- Mouth corners
- Mid and lower face volume loss
- Lip augmentation
- Fine lines and wrinkles around eyes, brow, mouth and cheeks
POLY-L-LACTIC ACID (PLLA)
Sculptra® is a unique biocompatible, bio-stimulatory dermal filler made of Poly-L-Lactic Acid, designed to stimulate collagen production in the tissues.
PLLA microparticles act as a stimulus for collagen production, providing long-lasting, natural-looking volume enhancements in the tissues where it is injected. Collagen is a crucial protein that maintains the skin’s structure, firmness and elasticity. This unique volumizing injectable will globally restore volume to the lower 2/3 of the face and can be used to treat skin laxity on the neck, decollete, arms, abdomen, and thighs. It is also used for non-surgical butt lifts.
Sculptra has a long safety profile and high patient satisfaction. Unlike some fillers that provide immediate results, Sculptra’s effects develop gradually over several weeks to months, creating a more natural-looking outcome with long-lasting results, up to 2 years.
CALCIUM HYDROXYLAPATITE
Radiesse® has been licensed by Health Canada since 2005 as an injectable dermal filler made of calcium-based microspheres suspended in a water-based gel. Its safety and efficacy is well studied.
This filler is unique because it has two properties;
- Immediate volume replacement (like Hyaluronic Acid).
- Stimulation of your own collagen production.
The ability to stimulate your body’s own natural collagen and elastin is what makes this product truly unique. The body progressively replaces the calcium microspheres with type I collagen and elastin, so your skin stays firm and contoured and your aesthetic results are sustained.
RADIESSE® is the only FDA-approved dermal filler to restore lost volume in the hands. By minimizing the visibility of veins and tendons, it gives an instant smooth and natural look.
Benefits
Dermal filler offers immediate non-surgical correction of volume loss and wrinkles/deep lines. In the weeks after injections, the filler cushions and hydrates the connective tissue, giving the volumizing effect. It also stimulates your body’s own collagen and elastin production to maintain smoothness of your correction.
Recent innovations in treatment show that when Radiesse® is hyper-diluted and injected superficially under aging skin it acts as a bio-stimulating agent, rather than a volumizer. This is called Radiesse® skin tightening. Collagen and elastin production starts as early as 4 weeks after injection. Ultimately, there is long term tissue remodeling and dermal rejuvenation.
How It Works
Dermal fillers replace areas of lost volume to restore the natural contours of the face. At Kamloops Skin Solutions you, together with our highly trained physician injector will develop a customized treatment plan to address your unique goals. Most treatments take 1 hour or more depending on complexity of correction.
What To Expect
Once the filler is placed patients can expect some numbness, much like the dentist, as there is Lidocaine in the product for added comfort. Common side effects are related to injection and include bruising, swelling, mild discomfort and induration which resolves within a few days.
Results
The results are seen immediately. To achieve correction, treatments may be staged.
